About Us

Altar Society monthly mass is 4:00p.m. the first Saturday of the month, the meeting is 1:30p.m. on the first Saturday in Msgr. Gauthreaux Center rooms 3 & 4.

Membership and Purpose

The Saint Maria Goretti Altar Society, one of the oldest parish organizations, was established in February 1965. Members of the Altar Society are adult parishioners, who work together to:

Foster love for the House of God and labor for its proper adornment and cleanliness.

Promote frequent attendance at Mass and the reception of the Eucharist.

Take care of the immediate needs of the altars, and supply the needs of the sacristy, and render assistance when necessary.

Instill devotion, within the parish, in honor of Saint Maria Goretti through prayer and service.

The Altar Society is led by Reverend Monsignor Earl Gauthreaux, its spiritual director, and its elected officers: president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

The Society meets on the first Saturday of each month at 2:00pm, with the exception of December, June, July, and August.

Members attend the 4:00 pm Mass after the meeting and recite the Rosary prior to the Mass.

Joyful Service

Members join committees that work toward the Society’s objectives, such as, the care of the altar vestments and the Chapel.

Members and sometimes other parishioners assist the committee members, who are charged with the following duties:

Cleaning of the Church, in accordance with Altar Society traditions, for Easter and Christmas Services.

Preparing and distributing palms for Palm Sunday Services.

Preparing for the feast day of St. Maria Goretti with an annual Cookie Bake, where committee members prepare cookie dough and the membership take out their trusty rolling pins to make hundreds of cookies for the feast day.

Feast Day of St. Maria Goretti

The feast day of our Patroness, St. Maria Goretti, which is July 6, is celebrated by the Church, annually, on the first Saturday in July.

Altar Society members participate in the Cookie Bake one week before the Feast Day.

On the feast day, members assist with the St. Maria Goretti Altar, and join in the celebration of the Mass and the reception following the Mass.

Members also distribute cookies at the Sunday masses, the next day.

Fund Raising

Members operate the kitchen at the Thursday night Bingo, selling hot dogs, nachos, and their famous muffins to help generate the funds needed to insure that the Altars are properly adorned.

They also hold other fundraisers during the year.
